CEPI began in 2014 as the Alpha and Omega Reconciliation and Peace Building (AREPEB), a small initiative responding to communal tension in western Tanzania. What started as a handful of dialogue sessions between neighbouring villages grew, year by year, into a trusted regional actor for reconciliation.
As our work deepened, so did our understanding: lasting peace cannot be separated from livelihoods, rights, water and governance. Communities do not experience conflict, poverty and exclusion as separate problems — and so we stopped treating them that way.
Today, as Community Empowerment and Peace Initiatives, we carry that same founding conviction into a broader mandate: that genuine transformation is community-led, evidence-based and built for sustainability long after our programmes conclude.
CEPI exists because communities asked for a partner who would listen first and act second. Every programme we run is built on that promise. As we grow, our commitment to transparency, accountability and genuine partnership with the people we serve will never change — it is the foundation everything else is built on.
